The hotel surveillance video, obtained by CNN and released Friday, is reportedly from March 5, 2016, and compiled from multiple camera angles. The incident matched an allegation levied in Ventura’s November sex trafficking, rape and physical abuse lawsuit against the hip hop mogul. The two settled the civil suit one day after it was filed.

Settlements aren’t justice. It just means the wealthy can do anything they want and just cut a check.

The more wealth discrepancy the cheaper it is for them.

Also, if the only penalty is a fine, it means it disproportionately affects lower-income people and is simply a tax on being poor. Justice isn’t justice if it impacts people from varying economic positions in drastically different ways.

      Settlements aren’t justice

We dont have justice. More than 95% of all criminal cases are plead out. Which is often just an economic decision if you can’t afford a lawyer, because a court appointed lawyer will just instruct you to take the deal.

Our entire court system would fall apart, if even half those cases went to trial.

Oh, great, so he bought evidence of a crime from the hotel (how are both of sides of that transaction not being prosecuted for obstruction of justice?!), and held onto it long enough to go past the surprisingly short statute of limitations. I guess if you have the money, that’s all you need to do.

    That SoL is ridiculous.

According to the McCready Law Group, the statute of limitations in California is one year for simple assault. For felony assault, it is three years.

Oh, wow. That’s not nearly long enough for someone who is in an abusive relationship. It can take years to extract oneself from such a situation. I mean, if it was a random bar fight between strangers or even friends, sure. But abusive relationships can go on for fucking years because of the psychological and emotional abuse that accompanies the physical abuse, neither of which apply to a random scuffle.

    Amend this law.
