It got that name because the welts look like a worm in a circle under the skin. It looks like a raised red ring about 2-3cm in diameter that is usually pretty painful and itchy.
The driverless robo-taxis are also a concern. When one of them killed someone in San Francisco there was not a clear responsible entity to charge with the crime.
The current court cases show that the manufacturers are trying to fob off responsibility onto the owners of the vehicles by way of TOS agreements with lots of fine print and Tesla in particular is getting slammed for false advertising about the capabilities of their self-driving features while they simultaneously try to force all legal liability onto the drivers that believed their advertising.
The lack of accountability means that there is nothing and no one to take responsibility when the robot/computer inevitably kills someone. A human can be faced with legal ramifications for their actions, the companies that make these computers have shown thus far that they are exempt from such consequences.
The laws criminalizing abortion also effectively criminalize miscarriages because of the way they investigate things and the fact that dilation and evacuation/curettage is frequently needed for miscarriages that occur after 10 weeks or so. The conservatives in question will refuse to accept that the fetus died in utero without any intervention and prosecute women that have to have dead fetal tissue removed to prevent sepsis, save their lives, and preserve future fertility if that’s what they want.
The epidemiological data shows that even people with adequate dental hygiene and healthcare access benefit from fluoridated water. Communities with fluoridated water have lower rates of tooth decay and associated oral diseases across all socioeconomic strata.
The point is that there are people that cannot regularly afford fluoridated toothpaste or for some other legitimate reason cannot brush their teeth as often as is recommended. Fluoridated water is the best and only dental care many Americans get, and it doesn’t carry any harms that are even meaningfully measurable.
I’m coming around to yeet the rich…into volcanoes…with ritual and style for good measure.
What about into the planet? Maybe if we start sacrificing billionaires to random volcano gods, things will finally change somewhat. (And yeeting bloated oligarchs into volcanoes is a lot cheaper and more environmentally friendly than launching their corpulent butts into space.)
When I was working as an ER tech, I had a patient that was in the early stages of DTs in the lobby because he lied and told the medics in the ambulance that he was having a panic attack. We were up to 8 hour waits in the lobby and non-critical ambulances were being brought out to the lobby. He was perfectly lovely the entire time, but around the 5 hour mark when the valium was wearing off, he started sweating and shaking profusely. I had to have our registration folks distract his dad so I could ask him privately if he was withdrawing from alcohol. When he said yes to that question, that bought him a ticket to the front of the triage line and we got him into the next available room.
I will remember that incident for the rest of my career, because if I hadn’t looked at his medical record to see that he had previously had a consultation regarding alcohol cessation and known what the symptoms of withdrawal looked like, I wouldn’t have pulled him aside to get the truth of the situation and things could have gone extremely badly for him. I can’t imagine what he was feeling, devolving into DTs in front of his dad who was so judgemental that he had to lie to the medics about what he needed help for.
Withdrawal from many drugs is miserable to go through, but because of the chemical mechanism of the dependency formed in alcohol use disorder, withdrawal from alcohol can lead to death without other comorbidities or complications. Some of the symptoms of acute withdrawal include delirium tremens and seizures which, while awful, are just the harbingers of the later stages of acute alcohol withdrawal that lead to death. This is also ignoring the plethora of other health problems that can develop as a result of long term alcohol use disorder, many of which can be fatal all on their own.
It’s also one of the most dangerous drugs to try to quit. Going cold turkey on alcohol can very well be lethal.
I want them to seize the Trump tower and turn it into low-income housing and a job training/community college with whatever liquid assets they do squeeze out of him. Use the disgorgement to help the people of New York have better lives.
The failure of the programmers to account for this kind of situation just speaks to their complete obliviousness and lack of understanding of other people. It’s not terribly different from the problem of voice recognition software working best with male voices in a west-coat American accent because that is the entire sample set of people used to train it in the beginning.
