"He is dusting off the old Republican playbook and bringing back the strategy known informally as 'Starve the Beast,'" said one advocate. "In this case, Social Security is the beast."
A neighbor of mine relies on social security and said he only gets $3000/year. He’s a cancer survivor in poor health with crippling bipolar disorder and lives in a care home. The home provides food and shelter but not clothing or recreation, so the locals always help him out. He’s only in his 60s. How is anyone supposed to survive like that? If they cut his pay any further he straight up won’t be able to live.
Well you see, at this point since he is no longer able to be exploited for capital, he is no longer useful to the ruling class, and must be discarded. He is a burden to the system an no longer has value. - right wing politics.
If that’s $3k/yr after paying a care home, that’s not so bad.
Social security is based on what you pay in: your top 35 years. If he truly only gets $3k/year, did he even work? Yes, you could argue there should be something need based
Sorry what?? $250 a month is not enough even when you don’t have to pay for housing or food. He would still have to pay if he wanted a cell phone. What about this copay on meds? I doubt there he has that coved 100%. According to the AARP “…1 in 5 adults of Medicare age, out-of-pocket health care costs in 2021 exceeded $2,000…” Or say he wants to go anywhere. It is likely he can’t drive, and if he could he couldn’t afford to keep a car, so that is rideshare or taxis for anywhere the senior van doesn’t go. Assuming there even is one.
But no he is most likely getting more than 3K but it is eaten up by the care home. Medicare is terrible at covering any type of assisted living. It covers full on hospital stays but the light care that keeps people out of the hospital not so much.
Cutting Social Security is also known as killing retirees.
Take that boomers… /s
In bird culture. This is seen as a dick move.
They staggered the reduction last time. This time it would really hurt Gen X forward.
We can’t allow this.
Agreed. Vote blue.
Maybe … And Maybe they will pull a Spanish Inquisition.
I wouldn’t expect them to do that, no.
Who would?
Nobody, that’s who.
I won’t lie; I upvoted (or whatever the lemmy version is) because I’m a sucker for any R&M reference.
If they aren’t making Republicans richer, the redcoats don’t care.

My Mom will lose her home as well.

Lol you think they’ll stop paying? If they cut the payroll tax it’ll just get paid with debt…just like it is right now.
We need to get ss needs based.
Cutting payroll taxes is also known as cutting regressive taxation
