Legislative Resolution number 32214, approved by the Peruvian Congress, was made public on December 28. The document establishes the permits for the arrival of U.S. Department of Defense military personnel, as well as their weapons, to the South American country.
According to the official document, the activities in which the U.S. soldiers will participate will be carried out from January 1 to December 31, 2025 throughout the territory of the South American nation. Said tasks are intended to “carry out training cooperation activities with the Armed Forces and the National Police of Peru”, according to the resolution.
The Executive Power stated in the text that the US military will be deployed in numerous provinces, including Lima, Callao, Loreto, San Martin, Huanuco, Ucayali, Pasco, Junin, Huancavelica, Cusco, Ayacucho, Apurimac, Santa Lucia, Puerto Maldonado, Iquitos and Pucusana.
In addition, the resolution indicates that the members of the U.S. Army will bring into the South American country 25 M4 rifles, 25 short barrels for M4 rifles, 25 M9 or M17 pistols and the same number of Glock pistols, among other weapons.
The document states that the Executive Power is authorized “so that, through a supreme resolution countersigned by the Minister of Defense, it may modify, when there are unforeseen causes, the starting date of the activities considered (…), provided that such modification does not exceed the period of exchange and training with the Armed Forces and the National Police of Peru and the time of permanence established and is made before the entry of the foreign military personnel to the territory of the Republic of Peru”.
For context they were also there for a decent chunk of 2023 and this November to “provide security” the APEC summit, I bet you couldn’t guess that this started happening right after they impeached Castillo after he was given zero chance to govern under their dictatorship era consitution, at least he tried to pull a coup, he could have just a easily quit or let himself be impeached quietly, although he might have ended up in jail regardless of what he did for the crime of being left of center as the president of Peru.
