Sadly I think the original poem has always been a lie. We’ve historically treated all immigrants like a subhuman species; black people, the Irish, and jews, in particular. (Antisemitism being frowned upon is a relatively new thing)
Famously the statue of Liberty says " Bring us your wealthy, your heterosexual whites, Your Christian elite yearning to breathe free"
